Search & Rescue Training

This is the foundation course for all SAR field responders seeking solid skills and insights.

  • Rescue, Survival

Prerequisites: ICS 100; & First Aid (IFA acceptable)
Hours: 40-50
Standard Length: Five days or two long weekends
Format: Classroom/lecture/discussion/exercises with near classroom and extended field evolutions
Equipment: Clothes and footwear adequate for the elements; compass; a 24-hour pack is desirable; instructors usually have specialty gear available for use in class

This is the essential SAR Manager Course for wilderness, urban, or urban interface.

  • Components of an Effective SAR Program (Local SAR Capability Assessment for Readiness)
  • SAR program development and management
  • Incident Command System (ICS)
  • SAR Mission Overview (Anatomy of a Search)
  • First Notice, Initial Response (SOP Driven)
  • Search Area Identification (Probability of Area)

Where to Search:

  • Discussion of the Process and Basic Principles to Establish the Search Area
  • Search Tactics (Probability of Detection)

How to Search:

  • Discussion of Search Methods and Probability of Detection

Extended Operations Overview:

  • How to Set the Stage
  • Rescue / Recovery Operations
  • Stakeholders and Critical Allies (External Influences)
  • Mission Termination
  • Post Mission

Hours: 20
Standard Length: One half day or evening and two full days
Format: Classroom lecture/discussion/table-top exercises with near classroom evolutions
Equipment: Clothes and footwear adequate for the elements; compass; a 24-hour pack is desirable; instructors usually have specialty gear available for use in class

This is a course for experienced SAR managers who may have to direct SAR activities beyond the third operational period.   (The first two days of this course are based upon the Initial Response Incident Commander course and the following days leverage mathematically driven tools sets and thought processes.)

Major Topics Include:

  • Mathematically based search theory and application
  • Planning for subsequent operational periods
  • Logistics for extended operations
  • Responder safety, care, and utilization for extended operational periods
  • Managing additional resources and out of area resources
  • Effectively dealing with increased media interest/activity
  • Leveraging SAR software
  • Suspension / curtailment complexities.

Prerequisites: At least 5 SAR missions; ICS 200 preferably 300
Hours: 40
Standard Length: Five days or two long weekends

Equipment: Clothes and footwear adequate for the elements; compass; a 24-hour pack is desirable
